How to find pages losing clicks, and which ones matter

By the Analistable team · Updated · 2 min read

In Search Console's Performance report, use Date → Compare (for example last 28 days vs the previous 28), open Pages and export. Calculate the change in clicks per page, then join GA4 conversions by landing page. Sort by lost clicks × conversion rate to fix the pages that cost you the most business, not just the most traffic.

Part of our guide: How to join spreadsheets on a common column

Step 1: export a comparison from Search Console

  1. Open Performance → Search results.
  2. Click the date filter, choose Compare, and pick two equal periods (compare the same weekdays to avoid weekly patterns).
  3. Open the Pages tab and click Export (Google Sheets, Excel or CSV).

The export has clicks, impressions, CTR and position for both periods per page.

Step 2: calculate the change

Click change = [@[Last 28 days Clicks]] - [@[Previous 28 days Clicks]]
Position change = [@[Last 28 days Position]] - [@[Previous 28 days Position]]
Impression change = [@[Last 28 days Impressions]] - [@[Previous 28 days Impressions]]

The pattern tells you the cause:

Reading the change
ClicksImpressionsPositionLikely cause
DownDownWorseRankings dropped
DownStableStableCTR fell — new SERP features, AI Overviews or a weaker title
DownDownStableLess demand (seasonality)

Step 3: add GA4 conversions

Export GA4's Landing page report for Organic Search over the earlier period, convert Search Console URLs to paths (see combining GA4 and Search Console data), and add:

Conv rate = XLOOKUP([@Path], GA4[Landing page], GA4[Conversions], 0) / XLOOKUP([@Path], GA4[Landing page], GA4[Sessions], 1)
Lost value = -[@[Click change]] * [@[Conv rate]]

Step 4: prioritise

Pages sorted by estimated lost conversions
PageClick changePosition changeConv rateEst. lost conversions
/pricing-3101.85.6%17.4
/blog/merge-csv-files-12002.50.6%7.2
/tools/compare-spreadsheets-1800.23.9%7

The blog post lost the most clicks, but the pricing page lost the most conversions. Fix /pricing first.

Small pages swing a lot by chance. Ignore pages with fewer than ~100 clicks in the earlier period, or look at a longer window.

What to do next

  • Position worse: check whether a competitor page or a Google update changed the results; refresh and expand the content.
  • CTR worse at the same position: rewrite the title and description, and check for new SERP features.
  • Demand lower: compare with the same period last year before changing anything.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compare two date ranges in Search Console?
In the Performance report, open the date filter, choose the Compare tab and select the two periods.
Why are my clicks down but my position is the same?
Usually lower click-through rate: new search features, AI Overviews, ads, or a less compelling title can reduce clicks at the same ranking.
Can I do this for more than 1,000 pages?
The interface exports 1,000 rows. Use the Search Console API, Looker Studio or the BigQuery bulk export for larger sites.
